I'm about to stop breastfeeding and switch my baby to formula. I've already been supplementing a little with the free samples of formula from the hospital. I've been getting different kinds of formula in the mail (along with coupons for different kinds). Is it okay to give my baby different kinds of formula? I don't want to waste it (it's so darn expensive!!).

It really depends on how old your baby is. If your baby is under 6 months, I wouldn't. You don't want them to have digestive issues and become colicky. Plus, their bellies are still developing so you want something thats really gentle and switching their diet will make them out of wack. I started switching back and forth between formulas when my child was about 6-7 months old. Dr said that the brandname ones are pretty much the same and if they didn't show any changes(spitting up more, gassier) then it would be fine. but do it slowly. Ex.-mix 2 oz of new brand with the brand that you were orignally supplimenting with. (2 oz new type+6 oz orignally type=8 oz bottle) And don't throw out those free samples. check the expiration date and save them if your baby's still really young. They have a good shelf life so you could hold onto to them for later.

It isn't best to keep switching formulas with the chance of giving your little one gas, or a stomach ache. There are some really good ones out there. We are currently on Enfamil Gentlease Lipil, (we also liked Good Start Supreme Comfort Formula; same version as Enfamil - different brand). It has broken down proteins that help ease stomach pain. Also whether or not you'd qualify many states have WIC that can help with the cost of formula. Our son is 9 months old and we get help through them. Save over $100 at least on formula plus juice, and cereal.

I didn't have good luck when I tried to change from expensive Similac to the Walmart brand...my baby wouldn't sleep anymore! But this article says that it's fine. I've always heard that you should keep them on a certain kind at least for a few days to lessen the chances of their stomach getting upset.

It's fine as long as it agrees with baby's tummy. Some babies it's makes absolutely no difference (they are mostly the same if you are switching between like Similac Advance and Enfamil Lipil...) others have sensitive tummies and may get gassy or diarrhea.

It's ok. Your baby may not like certain kinds and may react to a certain one. So just be on the lookout for any signs. Also, I'd recommend that you use all the milk based ones together, then switch to all the soy ones.
