The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon - a story about a boy who goes to the Library of Lost Books with his father and is allowed to take one book to read. He picks out "the Shadow of the Wind by Julian Carax, a writer that vanished at the peak of his writing career and the boy's journey to find out more about him is just the start.
Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin. An epic spanning a whole century, centered around the magical horse Athansor, a newspaper called the New York Sun, the builder of the Golden Gate Bridge, the romance between a thief and the daughter of the editor of the Sun, and a secret place in upstate New York called Lake of the Coheeries.
As a matter of fact, anything by Helprin.

Fun: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon. Fun and good story, easy quick reading.
Interesting: 'Fabric of the Cosmos' by Brian Greene. Interesting physics about the reality of the world in a way that us normal people can understand.
Politics: 'The Looming Towers' by Lawrence Wright. Background histories of Al Queda and 9/11. Pretty interesting stuff.
I think I noticed a couple ppl recommend the Narnia books, which were some of my favorite books as a kid. A lesser known CS Lewis fiction is 'Till We Have Faces' which is good.

i like The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella, or Can you Keep a secret by Sophie Kinsella. these books are both very funny and the kind you cant seem to put down.
i also like The China Garden. im not sure who its by but its a young adult book, although very interesting. another cute books is I Did, But I Wouldn't Now by Cara Lockwood.
if you're looking for a more serious read, i'd suggest Devils and Angels (or angels and devils, i actually forgot which) by the same author as The Da Vinci Code

I personally all love all of Dan Brown's novels. He has written four including:
Digital Fortress
Angels and Demons
The Da Vinci Code
Deception Point
Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code are my 2 favorites. I think that Dan Brown is an incredibly talented writer and you can tell what extensive research he does when writing a novel. I read Dan Brown novels when I want to get my mind working.
When I want to read entertaining, mindless novels there are 2 series I read. The names of the series are:
The Gossip Girl Series
The A-List Series
While these 2 series may not get you thinking as much, they are wildly entertaining.

If you liked the movie Jaws, I would suggest that you read the books by Steve Alten. Meg, The Trench, and Primal Waters. They are about a Megladon shark. It is large enough to eat a T-Rex in the first few pages of Meg.
