It's not really Wallace's soul. And don't listen to anon, Jules opened the case and didn't die. Pumpkin looked in the case and didn't die. It's supposed to represent something that the few have and the many want, whether it be money or power or whatever, but that's it.

There's actually a 'term' an oject like the briefcase is called in a movie. I just can't think of what they call it right now. But it's any object that the plot centers around but isn't actually neccesary to progress the plot along. The 'arc' in Raiders of the Lost Ark is considered to be one (whatever it's called). There are movies with others but I need a nap... ;-)

I remember seeing an interview with Quentin Tarentino in which he said (I think) that what Travolta and Jackson were carrying in the briefcase was Marcellus Wallace's soul. Thus the golden glow any time the case was opened, even though nobody withdrew anything of any value from it. Also, notice. Anyone who opened the case died. You can't stare into someone else's soul.

Don't let anybody give you the Marcellus' soul b.s. It still remains a mystery what exactly was in the case.

To the poster below, the term you're looking for is a 'McGuffin'. It was coined by Alfred Hitchcock, about the one thing that everyone in the film cares about, but really does matter, it just moves the story along.

This has actually been quite debated. From my understanding, Tarantino never did officially say what it was that was in the case. There is a lot of speculation that it was Marcellus Wallace's soul, but I believe the official answer is.. there is no answer.

As frustrating as that is. :/

Quinten Tarrentino (sp?) wanted to leave this a mystery. A lot of people think that it's Marcelis soul due to the bandage on the back of his neck. Not too sure how that works though...

Tarentino said it wasn't just Wallace's soul, but the souls of all the people Travolta and Jackson had killed for their real boss, Satan.........It's really the Oscar Tarentino wants!.......lol.....GOOD LUCK........GR1M
