lol imagine your finger caught in a machine that has a steel rolling pin, and you felt no pain. You're somehow distracted looking elsewhere...what happens?

That's a tough one. I'm in constant pain, it's chronic; so much so that I guess I'm kind of used to it. Well most of the time. I've lived a life of adventure and I've been hurt a lot, it catches up with You after a while. I broke my hand ten days ago and it didn't really bother me that much, in fact I didn't seek medical attention for it. I've found that when one part of my body is hurting really bad ( like my back for example ) then I don't feel the other pains that plague me. Meditation helps quite a bit and when it's really bad I take these pain killers that would put a junkie to sleep; they help take the edge off of it. I'd be happier I think if I didn't feel all this pain but what can You do? In my opinion the worst pain I've ever felt was when my Mother died, it was a physical pain in my heart; I thought I was going to die too. There is nothing that takes that away, not even time so far. Everything is in a perspective I suppose.

Absolutely! Physical pain is what protects us from harm. Imagine what would happen if you skinned your knee and it didn't hurt. You wouldn't stop what you were doing and go clean it up. Infection would set in, which would lead to gangrene, which would lead to amputation or possibly death!
I once read an article about a girl with a rare disorder that made it impossible for her to feel pain. She had to be examined by a nurse several times a day when she was at school, to make sure any scrapes, dirt in the eyes and other injuries could be taken care of. It's a very dangerous disorder. Sure, pain feels bad, but that's the point. If something hurts the first time, you're not likely to do it again.

I'm pretty sure this has been asked before.
Google to find the wikipedia page, there's a medical condition which is people who can't feel pain.
That will let you know exactly what would happen.
They get injured all the time, sometimes severely without knowing. It's very dangerous. Even for things as simple as washing or bathing they can scald themselves.
Of course pain is beneficial. The whole point is to alert you that something is not right (or very very wrong) with your body.
(i'll try and find it for you and edit later)

Yes, pain is beneficial. I saw a TV special about a girl that couldn't feel pain and she had all sorts of trouble because of it. If you have pain, you know if you're hurt and then you can do something about it. If someone that couldn't feel pain had appendicitis, for instance, they might die from it simply because they couldn't feel pain.

Definitely! Pain is our body's way of letting us know something is wrong. I saw on T.V. once they had this bit about a little girl that couldn't feel pain and she would actually scratch her eyes b/c she couldn't feel pain and I think she nearly blinded herself or something. So, yes, pain is very helpful.

People with Leprosy don't feel pain. They bang their limbs so much that they atropy and draw up into the body (hence the tales of body parts falling off).

Pain is our friend in the snese that it is a warning signal from the body that something is wrong. Without it, we could seriously injury ourselves or even get killed.
