1/20 or one twentieth It is easy to work out you just put the percentage number on top and 100 underneath so you get 5/100. 5 goes into the top ie becomes 1 and 5 goes into the bottom ie 5 into 100 is 20

You can think of the word 'percent' as meaning 'out of 100'. So you can immediately right 5% as the fraction 5/100. This reduces to 1/20.

i love this type of question because it relates to how to figure out a tip, for example. you might want to give a waitress 15%, so you want to know:
1. what is 10% of the bill?
and
2. what is 1/2 of 10% of the bill, so that:
you can add those amounts together, giving you both 10% and 5% = 15% = amount of a 15% tip = 15/100

10/100 = 10 = 1/10 = 1 tenth (take off one zero at the end of ten and one zero off 100, which equals one over 10, which is 1/10.

then,

5/100 = 5/100 = 1/20, because 5 is not 50 AND BECAUSE 5 goes into 100 twenty times. if 5 were 50, you could then take one zero off 50 = 5, and one zero off of 100 = 10. therefore 50/100 would be 5/10 = 1/2 because 5 goes into 10 two times, yes?

okay, so now the bill is $23.00

10% of $23.00 = $2.30 and 5% (1/2 of the above ten percent) =

$2.30

+

$1.15
_____
=

$3.45,

which would be a 15% tip, yes?

i love this. thanks for your nice question.

5% = 5 / 100 = 5 / (5*20) = 1 / 20

Convert 5 percent to a fraction.

Divide 5 by 100

5 / 100 = 0.05

1 / 20 = 0.05. . . .Simplified, five divided by five = 1 and 5 divided into 100 = 20..therefore 5 / 100 = 1/20.
