If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well
it were done quickly. if th' assassination
could trammel up the consequence and catch
with his surcease success, that but this blow
might be the be-all and end-all here,
but here, upon this bank and {shoal} of time,
we'd jump the life to come. but in these cases
we still have judgement here, that we but teach
bloody instructions, which, being taught, return
to plague th' inventor. this even-handed justice
commends th' ingredience of our poisoned chalice
to our own lips. he's here in double trust:
first, as i am his kinsman and his subject,
strong both against the deed; then, as his host,
who should against his murderer shut the door,
not bear the knife myself. besides, this Duncan
hath borne his faculties so meek, hath been
so clear in his great office, that his virtues
will plead like angels, trumpet-tongued, against
the deep damnation of his taking-off;
and pity, like a naked newborn babe

If I'm going to do this, I should do it right away.
If by killing the king, I become the next king, and that were the end of it, that would be great; however there are many reasons not to do it. Bad deeds return upon the one who does them (what goes around, comes around). If I kill the king, perhaps I'll be killed next. And Duncan is my relative, my lord, and my guest - three reasons not to murder him. In fact, I should protect him instead. Moreover, Duncan has been a really good king, which is yet another reason for not harming him.

First of all, I really do not normally do this. The assignment was given to you to complete - but this is a huge speech and a very important one in the script. Consider this is a one-off.

"If it (the murder) is to be done, when it is done, it would be best to do if quickly.
If this assasination results in my success, that this one blow is the sure means to success - by doing so to push Duncan into eternal life.
However, in cases of murder we face consequence on earth. If we teach people how to be bloody in their deeds, and being a bloody instructor, that deed will return to plague the teacher. It is this logic that keeps us from drinking from that posioned way of thought.
Duncan is here, and feels safe for many reasons: first, I am his sworn protector and a subject to his crown - two main reasons why I should be against the murder. I am also his host, who should shut the door against anyone who would wish him harm, not be the murderer myself.
Besides all this, Duncan has been a humble King, has done extremely well in his reign - these virtues will be in high consideration towards the damnation of his murder, and his subjects will pity him - to the point where no one will not hear of the murder, and all will cry for him.
I have no reason to carry out this murder, with the exception of my incredible ambition which overleaps all these ideas and is the main focus of my life."

You left out the last four or five lines of the solilioquy - so I filled them in for you.

From now on, please do the work yourself. If you are unsure, check with your teacher.

Is this a trick question?

If we help, then they won't really be your own words, will they?

It's really not all that difficult. Macbeth is all by himself, and is considering whether or not to go through with the murder of King Duncan. The speech consists of the Pros and Cons...all you need to do is extract the details.

Murder has consequences - kill someone and you must face not only judgement but the murder itself will revisit you. It's even worse because this guy is my relative and I should be protecting him. The guy I'm about to kill is a nice guy so the person who murders him will be as blamed as if he had killed a baby.
