It's hard to determine from the description exactly what your problem is.
Is your gateway a local router or a router at your ISP? If the gateway is a local router, it could be a multitude of things, but most likely is that either your internet service is down, or that the WAN interface is misconfigured or not configured at all. Another, albeit unlikely possibility is that the WAN interface is malfunctioning, which could be a hardware failure. If you have access to the router configuration, check to see that all lines are configured and connected properly. If you are on DSL, make sure that the WAN act light on your router is on, and if applicable, line speed is negotiated in the router.
If your gateway is a router at your ISP, the ISP is either experiencing difficulties, or you're having DNS issues. If this is the case, attempt to ping a remote site, such as google (72.14.207.99). This will help you determine whether or not DNS misconfiguration is the issue.

Check your firewall to see if its set to block all. This sometimes happens when an external port scan triggers alarm bells from your firewall and asks you to take action. If you aren't there to take act is blocks_all until you tell the firewall to stop, taking deep cleansing breaths, and calm down.
If that doesn't work drink a beer, then
Try resetting your NIC card. Go to Start>Run and type in "cmd" (no quotes) and hit enter. This opens the command screen.
Type in "ipconfig /release" and hit enter (this releases your local ip assignment)
Then type in "ipconfig /renew" and hit enter (this well renews your ip)
Then try to connect to the net. It should work now.
If that doesn't work drink a beer then:
check your router. If may need to be shut down and restarted due to your ISP changing a DNS server your modems connection to your WAN port may have come loose.
If that doesn't work drink a beer then:
Go into your control panel and check to see if your network adapter is having any problems. You do this by going to the system icon, then hardware, then device manager. Right click on your network adapter select uninstall and restart your computer (have the driver cd handy) and reinstall the drivers for your nic.
If that doesn't work drink a beer...
by this time you shouldn't really care about the internet anymore...

not sure what your gateway device is... mine is a wireless router that is connected to my cable modem. If I can ping my router, then I can administer it too, so I login and check to see what the WAN connection looks like and if it has an IP ADDRESS supplied from the CABLE MODEM for the time warner cable network. Usually these problems are easily solved by powering down the router and cable modem, disconnecting the cables from the cable modem, and turning them back on, reconnecting the CABLE first to the cable modem, then the router to the cablemodem. If you login to the router and it still does not have a WAN IP ADDRESS you have to call your ISP etc.

Hi. The fact that it can ping successfully eliminates hardware as the issue. Have you changed/added software recently? If so, try removing it. Browser configured OK? Firewall installed and set up right?

You could possibly have a DNS issue. What kind or errors are you receiving when browsing? Also, can you enter an IP address to access a website?

Are you using a hub or a router?
If you are using a router, then you should check the Internet connection settings and make sure they are set to connect to the LAN.
If you are using a hub, then the easy fix is to spend $20 and get yourself a router.
Their are ways to use a hub, but they are time consuming, aggravating, and not worth the trouble.
