Keep in mind that the beaches in FL aren't like the beaches up north, there aren't boardwalks w/ rides and carnival stalls.
The atlantic side is better for surfing because the waves usually get larger. Cocoa beach is orlando's closets beach but Daytona Beach has Ponce Inlet which has a historic lighthouse.
On the other side (the gulf), there's Fort DeSoto beach near st pete. This was named hte #1 beach in teh nation by drbeach.org. It has a nice canoe trail and a bike trail. I always get confused because there's two "Fort DeSoto" beaches, one which is much nicer than the other.

Tampa Bay. There are tons of different beaches that you and your family could go to. Personal favorite Fort De Sota beach. Rated #1 four years in a row.
