What are my options?

There is a large attic door opening right where you'd hang a garage door opener. It is large enough to get a snowmobile up in the attic. I was going to get this as a gift for my father in law who uses the door quite often. He turnes 80 next week...

It's called manual labor.....your hands and arms are always with you so you wont lose your "garage opener" and you dont have to hang them from the ceiling or store them in your garage leaving more space for storage....its what I do and I'm okay with it!!

Well as your question is phrased you are only looking to not have to hang the garage door opener from the ceiling. There is a manufacture out there that the opener runs off the end of the coil torsion spring and cable shaft. so if you were in the garage looking at the door the opener would either be at the far left or right top of the door opening.

From what I gather in your question you don't have enough clearance between your garage door (when open) and your ceiling if that's the case they make a modification kit for the garage door track elbow so that you can lower the upper track down in order to gain the clearance you need to install a regular garage door opener its not hard to do simple tools needed cost about $30.00 Home Depot or Lowe's have them hope this helps

In 35 years of building I've never heard of one like your talking about. By the way, where is the door going to go when it's open? Let us know what you find out.

Kaky has an idea but, the doors still have to go somewhere.

Why not barn-style doors that slide to one side?
