I was in elementary school until the late 70's but I think I'm well qualified to answer this. It's a two-parter really. The first half of the 70's the hippy look went mainstream. Ponchos, big-a** bell bottoms, patchwork stuff, platforms, fringe jackets. Just check out the Partidge Family and the Brady Bunch or any Jackson Five Album, that's was early 70s. The mid to late 70's there were still some bell bottoms, asymmetrical skirts, flowing things for women, wedgies, I recall there was a retro 1950s and 1940s thing going on then, disco. Look at Saturday Night Fever (1978) and that 70s Show for what was going on then. I swear that Fez is dressed just like my older brothers were! The disco thing ended quickly, and the punks took over. Skinny pants became the thing, and the 60s started becoming the new retro. That carried over into the 80s. A good question is when will the designers come up with something original that is not based on the decades prior?

Lots of synthetic materials, big bold prints, and platform shoes. To see really good examples of 70's clothing, watch Three's Company, Good Times, The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family, and the movie Saturday Night Fever.

Basicly the same fashions you see now on women. Men back then wore nice tight jeans so you could see thier butts...wasn't a guessing game as to "what they are hiding down there".
