My gf loves THE LION IN WINTER, an older film with Katherine Hepburn and, if memory serves me right, Peter O'Toole. She loves Renaissance fairs and stuff like that but she also says it's a great performance by the stars. I think it's her favorite Hepburn film (not that she's seen them all) and I'm not really sure who the male actor was... maybe him, maybe not... She loved the story. Any ideas of other films she might like and which would make good birthday presents?

WOW! I haven't seen anyone mention that film in ages! What a fantastic one, too! Anthony Hopkins should've gotten an Oscar for his portrayal of Richard. Yes, "A Man for all Seasons" would be good. Yes, it was Peter O'Toole, playing Henry II, a role he reprised in another film, dealing w/the murder of Thomas a Becket (can't recall the name)! OH! I just read above, the name of the film is "Becket"-it's excellent. I agree w/that answerer about "Anne of a Thousand Days", too.

Here is list of Medieval or Renaissance-era films, some from memory and some from about.com, (see link below):

: “Shakespeare in Love” (w/Gwynneth Paltrow), “Excalibur”, “A Knight’s Tale” (w/Richard Gere, Julia Ormond & Sean Connery...not very "accurate" with costumes, but still pretty good), “Camelot” (w/Vanessa Redgrave & Richard Harris, from 1964. Older but still great costumes & sets), Zeffirelli’s “Romeo and Juliet” (STUNNING! It's a must-see), “The Taming of The Shrew” (w/Liz Taylor & Richard Burton), “Ladyhawke” (w/Michelle Pfeiffer & Rutger Hauer), “Robin Hood” (w/Kevin Costner) and for Laughs, Mel Brooks’ “Robin Hood: Men in Tights” and “Monty Python and The Holy Grail”, “Much Ado About Nothing” and “Henry V” (both w/Kenneth Branagh), “The Return of Martin Guerre” (w/Gerard Depardieu, “Hamlet”, “Braveheart” (I’m not a Gibson fan, but both are excellent), “The Name of The Rose” (w/Sean Connery & Christian Slater), “Merlin” (w/Sam Neill).

In a more fantastic vein, there are “Willow”, “The Princess Bride”(w/Cary Elwes) and “Dragonheart” (w/Dennis Quaid).

Recently, the film “Arthur” (I THINK, w/Clive Owen) got mixed reviews (rightly so), but is still worth watching to see Keira Knightly as a blue-painted, warrior Guinevere...quite a departure from all the legends!

I love these films too, so I may add to the list if I think of any more.

It occurred to me that if your g/f likes costume dramas, she MIGHT like a film like "House of Flying Daggers", w/Zhiyi Zhyang (sp?), who was in "Memoirs of a Geisha". It has incredible scenery and beautiful costumes and takes place in medeival CHINA! The martial arts are spectacular, too.

A Man for all Seasons, Anne of a Thousand Days, Elizabeth 1st. with "Helen Miren". She also stars a Queen Elizabeth 2nd. in the just released, "Queen".

Anne of 1000 Days, was an excellent movie that would be enjoyed by most!

I believe "Becket" tied into "Lion in the Winter"

I read "Nationof's" answer it is detailed, I think we have seen them all the same movies. I seen all in his list and enjoyed most...I really enjoyed "Shakespear in Love" and recently "Mrs. Henderson Presents"

The lead role male, was Peter O'Toole in "Lion" and also was in "Becket" if memory serves me, also in "Lion" the eldest son was played by Anthony Hopkins, Sir Tony if you please...

"The Thin Man" movies of the 1930's with William Powell and Myrna Loy had witty discussion, now not particularly as heavy as "The Lion in Winter." "Becket" which stars Peter O'Toole as King Henry as a more youthful guy has a few excellent strains in it as good. It's now not as steady as "The Lion in Winter" "Network" has a few excellent discussion in it as good. Ned Beatty's speech is a conventional. "Glengarry Glen Ross" is a excellent film for discussion as good. It was once written by means of David Mamet.
