Every year the day after Christmas my parents have a party called "Charlie Comeback". They have people over to eat leftovers & play games. We always have "Chinese Christmas" (I'm sorry if that's racist, I'm sure there's another name for it - but that's what we say).
To participate you have to bring a gift with no tag on it. Everyone puts their gifts on the table and people draw numbers out of a hat to see who picks 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. The 2nd person can pick what #1 took or pick another wrapped present. (3rd can take 1st or 2nd and so forth.) At the end the person who was #1 can pick anyone else's present - obviously they have all been unwrapped at this point.
Long story short... the best part about this game is that the presents are all total crap. You either bring a gift you bought, one that someone gave you but you don't like, one that you make, one that you find around your house, etc. Here are some examples:
- a container of Oreos - that were partially eaten.
- a huge tub of margarita mix (see - not all the gifts suck)
- an enema
- a dollar store home pregnancy test
- a thrift store crochet kit
- an old bottle of St. John's wort that had expired.
- a bottle of wine
- a stuffed animal that sings (perhaps one that your mother in law gives you that you clearly are not interested in - personal note - sorry)
(these are all gifts that I've seen people open).
Really long story short...
Yes.... I have used bags or rocks, or other stuff to disguise a present. It makes it a ton of fun. This year my Chinese Christmas present is going to be a huge box with something to weigh it down, filled with a handful of kazoos.
We have a crazy, fun family. We always have a blast opening these ridiculous presents. It's so popular that some people think of the gifts they'll bring all year!
Legitimately, I wouldn't stuff bags into a gift for a kid or elderly person - or anyone who's sensitive (unless it's Chinese Christmas!)

Yes I have done this before...
If you want to "bulk up" a present, then consider that it's supposed to be fun looking through all that material to find the gift.
If you make opening the gift the entertaining part, then you can use anything that gets the job done: bulk up the gift with paper, wrap it in duct tape, tie it with an excessive amount of twine...so the person has to work at it.
But consider the temperament of the person who is getting the gift and going through all this trouble. If you don't think that person will enjoy the joke and the challenge, then don't do it. Instead of fun, the stunt will just come off as annoying.

Just carrier bags??? I once wrapped up my sisters christmas present in ever increasing boxes - starting off with a tissue box and ending up with a tv box added with a few bricks to add to the illusion. My sister opened the first layer and thought she'd really got a tv,after being a bit disappointed she played along and was more than happy with the final present.
It's the thought that counts isn't it?

Yes, I love to wrap things up in totally different shapes to what is actually inside, or put boxes in side of boxes, each wrapped and ribbon ed, 32 is my record - for a laugh! (I know get a life)
To throw people off the scent. Bubble wrap taped up around the gift is a great way to do this, simply wrap the pressy, then create a totally weird shape, then wrap it, then leave it under the tree for weeks, REALLY gets them curious to say the least! lol
Happy Wrapping.

I don't do this to "bulk it up" if it's small, but only to disguise its shape it it is obvious what it is, OR if I know they'll love it. Otherwise, people get all excited for nothing.
