I think it is a great idea. If the public schools don't do their job, as judged by the parents, the parents should get their per pupil allotment in a voucher to use elsewhere.
Incentive for the school to do better, ability for our children to get better education if private schools can do it better for the same amount.

how does that fix the problem. you are basically saying we know this school is bad so lets let you go to another school if you want to. If its so bad then close it down, you run it. move everybody somewhere else or fix it, make it follow your so called policies that are what you believe is best for kids.
So now what makes these schools so bad is the real question. How about the lowering of family teaching and values. The children are being taught you can do whatever you want, nobody can tell you what to do your FREE. So lets let those same people go somewhere else with that same attitude. That just spreads the problems.
your putting a bandaid on an infected sore that will continue to grow until you treat the problem.
and competition between schools is such a bad idea the above statements apply. this school is so great the parents with the kids causing the problems will say "hey lets send our kids their they do such a good job." that lowers the good schools ability to do the good job. its a sick cycle.
talk to any teacher that has been around for a while. Schools are bad because of society, not the schools. and this inturn keeps the good teachers from wanting to teach leading to a society that doesnt want to learn and teachers that are bad at teaching

Parents do have the right to put their kid in a private school, or homeschool.
Vouchers pull money from the public schools to help a few kids, at the expense of the rest.
Some states have open enrollment, so if you don't like your school, then the kid can go to a different one. Also, charter schools are usually free, and act under the state school board, providing an alternative road to schooling.

the thinking is that public schools would disappear, and they already are in inner cities like Detroit. Funding is based on enrollment. Personally, I'd like to see education privately funded, and optional. But that's crazy to most people
Vouchers can be used at schools that are MORE liberal than public schools as well. It isn't a religion thing, and parents can send their kids to religious schools if they want. Why should I have to pay for it?

Because it uses a lot of money to raise the educational prospects of a minority at the expense of the majority.
Surely it would be better instead to put the money into improving public education for all?

the liberals hate school vouchers because they know public schools today are more like indoctrination camps that teach leftist views. the teacher's union is controlled by radical leftists who dictate what's allowed and not allowed to be taught in public schools.
vouchers give parents access to private schools which means fewer kids are being brainwashed by the leftist controlled public school system and taught american values and morals.
