The UK Police generally carry a friction lock baton and pepper spray. They are also issued with a stab/bullet proof vest and handcuffs along with their other bits of uniform. These can be effective tools but I have found myself in several dangerous situations where a firearm or tazer would have been of much more use. I'm not saying that I would ever want to kill someone, this would be the last thing on my mind but if it was me or them then I know what my option would be. I must say find it quite surprising that you find it a 'breath of fresh air' that the Police in the UK are not armed but then ask 'how on earth do the Police catch an armed criminal?' My answer to that that would be that we do so with difficulty and fear for our own safety! We do however have access to firearms teams if needed although in my experience, the time it takes to get their deployment authorised is often detrimental to the circumstances of the incident for which they are needed.

One thing you should have done if this alleged assault took place was to make your complaint to the police custody sergeant at the police station if you were arrested. Secondly, you should have asked to be seen by a doctor whilst in their custody. and you should also have returned to see an Inspector at the police station when you were released. I am sure that many police officers will agree with me that alleged assaults by police are in the minority and do not reflect the great work that Police Officers do every day. it only takes a few to spoil the view of the many good.

I have always found the UK police to be polite and attentive when I have encountered them.
My guess is that you got caught by a few of the bad apples. Did you raise a formal complaint ? That would have got you a proper beating.

well im sorry but you must have done SOMETHING im sure they didnt just pick a fight in the street, and if they did im sure it would be all over the news by now. if you feel it was that serious im interested to know whether you have put in a complaint. our police should be given the right to over power people with more than just batons and cs gas aswell, thats why this country is a soft touch for crime

If you feel that the Police were over zealous in their actions you have a right to report them and their actions. If enough reports are made against the officers in question they will face disciplinary action and maybe even sacking and prison.
If however, you was resisting arrest and being abusive, you may have got a few marks from a scuffle.

Seriously - if there really is a cause for complaint, about the Police making an unprovoked attack on you or your friend, make a complaint as soon as possible.
There is information on making a formal complaint on the Independent Police Complaints Commission's website. I've provided a link below.
Make sure you get a note of any witnesses and (if possible) the numbers of the officers involved etc. Also, whilst its still fresh in everyones minds, write down what happened as clearly and concisely as possible. Complaints can take time so its better to have it down now before time makes things fuzzy.
Don't worry about getting a bad rep. Next time they might hurt someone seriously and do you really want that on you because you didn't speak up?

for police to have done that much damage to you you must have either A-resisteded an arrest B-tried to run, (again resisting arrest) C-showed threatening behaviour
these are ARRESTABLE OFFENSES
in these cases the police are right in useing "reasonable force" to restrain you as you are seen as an immediate danger to them and the people around you. reasonable force is debatable
also if the injuries were that bad you would be making charges against the officers which you should have done in the station at the time...
take pictures of these bruises and take down thebadge number of the officers in question...
if the beatings were as bad as you claimed then i think you have a pretty damn good case against them...
