I wouldn't put chemicals in there. I think it will linger in there and cause food to taste funny. Here's what I do: I take a cup half full of water and put it on for long enough to boil. When the timer is done, do not open yet, leave closed about ten minutes. When you open the microwave door, the steam will have loosened up old dried food and is easy to wipe out. To get smells out, set a bowl of baking soda in microwave and close door, leave overnight.

To clean a microwave of food and debris, the best way is to put a microwaveable bowl of water with some lemon juice in it if you have it, otherwise water is ok and let it cook till good and steaming. Then wipe inside throughly. If any particles remain, do it again till loosened. Once its done, its easier to keep clean. Never use harsh chemicals in the microwave. If you have stuff sticking to the sides still, try letting the steam sit for a few minutes and going at it with a little baking soda on the rag and maybe going over it with one of those ERASERS from Mr. Clean. Works great for me. Learned this one when I bought a microwave at a garage sale for $5 and it looked good and when I got home found it was on the roof of the unit and had a funky smell. The lemon in the water deleted that and the steam loosened what was left so I could wipe it off. The thing cleaned up perfect and 3 years of use later sold it for more than I paid for it, WOW! Good luck!

Most cleaning products are made up of toxic chemicals. You should be able to get a healthier version at the grocery store called "Seventh Generation". The best cleaner is just plain vinegar and hot water for the greasy spots. Baking soda and water left on the dry cruddy stuff for an hour or so (no microwave on) will soften it and then you can wipe it off.

Turning your microwave on when there is no food inside can damage the microwave. The microwaves can reflect back and damage the magnetron. You can just put a cup of water inside or something to absorb the waves.

You need to think about what you are putting in your microwave for cleaning products, that might end up in your food. I always use a diluted mix of a cleaner and really hot water.

Most cleaning chemicals were not meant to be heated. Try a mug of water with lemon juice in it. heat for a few minutes. the evaporating water will loosen stuff up and help with the smell.

How about if you "Loosen" up your microwave as it blows the side of your house off, have you ever thought about that? you don't know what's in some cleaning agents now days. My daughter darn near gassed herself with cleaner. If I haven't stopped in that morning, she would have died, she was unconscious. So, I wouldn't mess around, use good old elbow grease.

I've heard not to do that, but to heat up a cup of water. They steam will loosen any food. I also put a bowl of baking soda in there to sit for a day or two to absorb any odors.
