I read on another post that this weeks ep was crafted to give Joely Richardson a break, as one of her relatives (a Redgrave) died. Was it her mother, Vanessa? I hope not....she was great!

Yes, Vanessa Redgrave, Joely's real-life mom, played her on the show. Besides her aunt, she has a sister, Natasha Richardson (starred in "Nell" and "The Parent Trap") and at least one other sibling, a half-brother (son of Franco Nero). There's a Jemma Redgrave, who appeared in the film "Howard's End", but not sure of the relationship (daughter?). Then there's her famous father, Michael (I think) Redgrave, a well-known, British actor.

P.S. I was under the impression that, on Nip/Tuck, Julia only THOUGHT her mother died in the plane crash, but came home to find her there, alive (she hadn't taken that flight). Was that another hallucination?

Thanks all. Lord Z: someone in another question answered "a Redgrave died...I'm not sure which one". They didn't say who it was...that's why I asked!

She (Joely Richardson) is taking off to be with her daughter who suffers some sort of leg disorder and is going to need extensive surgery over the next few months to a year. Her mother, Vanessa, isn't dead in real life, only on the show.

Vanessa Redgrave, Joely's real mother, played her mother on the show. She died in the show, but did not die in real life. In fact, I haven't heard of a Redgrave dying in many years. I just checked IMDB and the most famous ones, Lynn and Vanessa, are indeed still alive.

You need to look up Corin Redgrave who was suffering with cancer during the filming last season. There are three Redgraves Corin, Lynn and Vanessa. No one said it was her mother. Apparently he survived his cancer but it did mess up the season.
