Knowledge of stability and trim. knowledge of Strengths of materials, physics, Drafting.

Just train to be a shipwright . The training for this covers all aspects of Ship building. Woodwork, Metal work , Welding , Fibreglass and carbon fibre , Plumbing and many other areas.
I spent 5 years training as a shipwright and have just spent the last 10 years working on many different types of vessel working as a shipwright.
