Here are a few suggestions:
1). Answer the phone, then place the receiver on the counter top and walk away. Solves 2 problems: if the person is ranting, you're not hearing it, and prevents others from calling for awhile.
2). Have an air horn nearby and as soon as you hear an insult, give 'em a blast.
3). Have a copy of your favorite book and just read it aloud, over the diatribes. At some point, they'll have to realize you're not listening and give up.
4). Tap the phone and say "recording."
5). Tap the hang-up button and say, "begin trace."
6). Report to the phone company you are getting crank calls.
7). Ask for an unlisted number

If you're in the uk ring up your telecoms provider and explain the situation to them. They will track all calls to your number. If you note down when these nasty calls come to you they will be able to provide the police with the numbers. Your telecoms provider may contact them (especially if they are on the same provider) and have their lines stopped. They can work with the police to take both civil and criminal action, or just threaten to take action - if it's complete morons doing it they should stop when they realise they could get a huge fine and go to jail!

Call your local phone company, or look for tips in the phone book, and see if they have a call trace feature. An example is, in Canada the company Telus has a service where a customer can press *57 for abusive calls. The calls (you should record at least 3) will be recorded by the phone company, and then, when you report to police, the police can get those records from the phone company.

answer the phone if abuse starts just place the receiver on the side, don't hang up and let them waste their money. As long as you like you, what does it matter that anyone else may think different F**k them. Obviously they are morons with nothing happening in their lives, so they seek to do childish things. The worlds full of asses, don't lower yourself to one of us.

Change your number and rise above it - they sound like bullying losers who obviously need to put someone else down to feel good about themselves..

That is not your problem though - what they are doing is just awful and it is no wonder you are bothered by it.. that said, build a bridge, get over it and don't let such idiots enter your thoughts a minute more - it seems they want to provoke a reaction in you so just don't let them.

Definately do not answer their calls again - hang up straight away if they catch you unawares..

I would contact the phone company first and file a complaint. Being abusive over the phone is illegal. Be sure to keep track of the date and time they call. If you have caller ID, be sure to keep track of the phone number they call from also. I'm not sure how old you are, but the phone company will sometimes change your phone number the first time for free for harassing phone calls. You can also file a complaint with the police department.

My sister use to have somebody phone her up on a regular basis giving her abuse. She tried ignoring them, putting the phone straight down once she knew it was them etc, trying to reason with them, all to no avail. Then a policeman gave her some advice,he told her to keep a whistle (like a referee's whistle) next to the phone, then when it rang and it was him, blow the whistle as hard as you can down the phone. This she did the next time he rang, and it worked.I hope he is still deaf in that ear now, having seen what upset it caused my sister. She would cringe everytime the phone rang.Try it,i hope it works for you too.

If any one should have low self esteem it is the caller. People who have to hide behind the phone to be rude is plain chicken sh*t. So what if they don't like something about you. You can't please every one. What's to like about them? Nothing so far. So hang up, ignore them, don't put yourself down to their level by trying to get even. You are a much better person than they are. Do you have ID caller? If so, put a block on their number, then they can't bug you on the phone any longer.

Advise the authorities that you're getting harrassing phone calls. Provide them with all the phone numbers that come up.
Be sure to record any and all #'s. But dont listen to the garbage.
Immediately, HANG UP! Once they realize that that their words arent being heard, it will no longer be fun for them. + one call from the authorities will also dampen their zest.

Do not get them back. It will only make the issue worse. Block all their phone numbers and hang up immediately if they just start into you. Abusive calls shouldn't knock up your self-esteem anyways, so don't let them win either in the physical sense or the emotional sense.
