I'm transitioning out of a relaxer right now and I want to wear cornrows because they don't required the time commitment of microbraids and I can take them out after about 10 to 14 days.

I'm thinking more Susan Taylor from Essence than Alicia Keyes.

I really don't think my employers will say anything. There's an Asian guy who works here and comes to work with a full face of make-up and a bob with a flip (it looks really nice).

My concern is how will I be treated when I go to department stores and restaurants and networking functions.

What do think when you see a professional woman with Cornrows.

Girl where do you live??? Obviously not around many people of color! Cornrows are as professional as the person that wears them. If you're some ghetto bird with blue or fire engine red weave in your braids, then heck no its not professional and of course people will treat you like a hood rat. But if your cornrows are neat and you carry yourself in a professional manner then you will be treated with respect. Who says that a woman with cornrows and in a business suit cant be professional? Don't forget, you can always have extensions added to your cornrows and were your braids in a bun or any other nice up-do!

Professional Cornrow Styles

As long as they are nice like Susan Taylors, 1 color, and a decent length, then they can be professional. All braid styles are not "ghetto" as others have said. Our society is eurocentric so some people feel that they are unprofessional. However, as a woman of color with a "natural 'do" myself, I am sure that some nice cornrows will look much more professional than wearing your hair out while transitioning. It will be quite healthy for your hair also. If you think it might be a problem run it by the management at your job before getting it done.

It really depends in what area you live/work in. Im from Cali & its so diverse here in the bay area so cornrows are worn all the time & by different races! As lon as they are neatly done, there's no problem. But i think in some areas it may be looked down upon as "ghetto". But those are generally close-minded people trapped in there own little bubbles. I have worn long, thin cornrolls & EVERYONE on my job loved it. But if u arent sure, then maybe u should try micro-singles.

I disagree with what most are saying here, they forgot to read the world 'professional woman'. If I were to see you in office wear with them, I'd probably think 'cool' and that's it. Remember it's the whole package, mannerisms, character and dressing that make public judgements.

It is professional if you can keep it neat in a ponytail or all the way back. You shouldn't have it in all different styles with criss cross and other designs in the hair.

As long as it's neat I can't see any problems. But I live in Chicago, we have every type of person you can think of; we're accustomed to everything. You would not even "raise an eyebrow" around here! In fact, I think it sounds nice.

The range of responses tells me...the answer to your question really depends on where you live. But I'm contemplating getting them. So I hope they look professional!

It depends where you live. In general culture I think cornrows are not considered professional.
