Well, it wasn't a cause of WWI per se...it was basically "the straw that broke the camel's back."
The main causes were territorial as well as economic, etc. etc. Then there was the tension between Serbia and Austria-Hungary, which was why Gavirilo Princip assassinated the archduke and his wife in the first place even though Ferdinand was trying his best to improve ties between his empire and Serbia.
