There is no easy answer.. but you know something you could reduce the UK co2 emissions to zero, and it wouldn't make the slightest difference to global warming.. there is an awful lot of scare mongering going on..

We did quite a bit of damage with the fireworks too and New Year is just round the corner. How many Countries dare ban either!
I will be doing my little tiny bit for the Planet and as I'm Atheist and Dont like fireworks. I save a fortune at this time of year too.
I only hope there are enough of us for whatever reason we dont do either will be enough to slow it a little. For most people the message its happening will not get through till the earthquake, hurricane or homes disappearing into the sea hits them close to home.
By posting this type of thing we might actually get through to some!
Keep up the good work and as I do try emphasizing the financial gain to themselves by any measure they take!

You are correct and your other respondents are correct. Nothing is going to happen more than cursory attempts until the crisis affects people directly. I mean, in their faces when they get up in the morning.
In my town, I'm a rarity because I drive a small car (don't even ask about bicycles...it's WAY to dangerous here. A bike shop wouldn't even sell me a bike to ride to work on when they heard where I would have to ride... I'm not joking and they were right). Everyone here seems to drive SUVs and big trucks. More than a couple of Hummers pass me every day.
The houses are HUGE (who needs seven bedrooms and three stories?). And yes, they will all be decked out with lights in a few weeks. Yep, it is pretty, but....
I just don't understand. I do try to do my part as best as I can, but around me, anything I try to do to conserve is eaten up by the Yukon or Suburban or Escalade in the lane in front, behind, and beside me.

There isn't universal agreement that we have global warming. The earth was warmer in the nineteenth century. Even if it is warmer, again, there isn't a consensus that carbon emissions is causing it. I think that you need to be a little more sceptical, particularly when the government intend to make money out of.

This government is using Global Warming as an excuse to raise taxes (pure and simple)
Our Carbon emissions make up approx. 3% of global emissions.
What bloody difference will it make if we cut ours by 75% (none)
Gordon has a massive black hole in his finances, especially when the European ruling on cigarette duty comes into effect, and he needs to find other ways to rob us.
The Queen"s speech today confirms the governments intention to charge road users by the mile.
This will be done using sat-elite technology, and guess what, you will have to pay to have the equipment fitted to your car before you can drive on the road. Just for the privilege of being robbed of cash for every mile you drive.
Will this replace "fuel tax"? not a chance, it will be on top.
Anyway, have a good day, whilst you can.

Yeah, you'll talk to someone about global warming, and they'll agree it's a huge issue and go drive off in their gigantic SUVs.

I know - its scary isn't it?
I do all I can in my home then look at my neighbours with every light in the house on all the time, gas heaters in their gardens and the windows wide open on these winter nights and think - whats the point?

well, i agree that unnecessary lighting is wasteful.
however, a few folks would benefit.
I learned that "holiday lighting" contests were first
begun by utility companies. Electric companies.
So the folks who hold stock in or work at electricity-producing ventures will benefit from the consumption.
