x² is "x to the power 2", or "x squared"

It means "x times x"

Often times you'll see this written as x^2 which also means x squared, or x to the power 2. The ^ notation helps when you can't easily type a superscript number.

For example x^3 means "x to the power 3" or "x cubed" and it equals x * x * x.

After 3, you'll just hear "x to the power 4", "x to the power 5" etc. Or sometimes people will say "x to the 4th power", "x to the 5th power", etc. There are no equivalent terms to "x squared" or "x cubed" for powers 4 and beyond.
