I bought a 1994 cadillac deville from a very honest man. He told me that he averaged about 24 miles to the gallon and that was also the reading on the dash (it displays the average gas mileage). However, I reset the counter on the dash and now it says I am only averaging about 20 MPG and I drive mostly on the highway. Do I have to run a whole tank of gas for an accurate reading? Or are they pretty accurate from the start?

they are pretty accurate.... it's not uncommon to get that kind of gas mileage out of the northstar engine. check three things... air filter.... spark plugs.... and make sure that you are using premium unleaded only in the tank. the motor DOES need 93 octain to run it's best.... 89 will reset the computer.... retarding the spark advance.

they are accurate from the start. They adjust to how you are driving. doesn't matter if you drive mostly highway if your getting on the gas heavy to pass or keep up with people (constantly changing speeds). Hey at least you're getting 20 mpg. I'm only getting about 12 MPG from my truck.

depends on how hard you hit the pedal? Did he drive the same way you do? On the mpg set trip at 0 then go to about a quater of a tank then fill it up. take the miles/gallons that is your mpg
