I've never been able to line my top eyelid. It just doesn't seem to work for me. If it looks bad on you to line your top lid, then don't! I use black eyeliner on my bottom lid and that's it, and I think that's what looks best on me. Go with what makes you look and feel good! :) There are no hard and fast rules in makeup.

i have the same problem. the first time i used eyeliner, i put it only on the bottom lashes but after a while, i realized that it makes me look kinda dead and sleepy.
so i put it all around my eyes and it just made my eyes look smaller than it usually is (i have small almond shaped eyes).
so now i put it only on the top and it really defines my eye in a natural subtle way. i curl my eyelashes and put on lengthening mascara (i love extra super lash by rimmel... only $1.99 at target and it is gel so it is completely clump-free). then i put on white eyeliner in the bottom inner rims, black eyeliner on the top lashes only (for a softer look, i smudge it a little).
and if i feel like it, i would wear sheer eyeshadow on the top.
oh, and if u want a smokey look, dont put eyeliner on the bottom. instead put a sheer brown, charcoal, gold, or other nature-y earthy color eyeshadow along ur bottom lashes.

Try using a more natural eyeliner color. I suggest Mary Kay eyeliner in bronze. When you use eyeliner it tends to make your eyes appear smaller (especially if you apply it to your bottom eyelid). So, to give your eyes a wide and open look, only use eyeliner on the outer 2/3 of your eye, after you have applied eye shadow. If you still want to use liner on your your lower lid, just use it towards the most outer part of your eye. Presto! You're eyes will "pop!" and will be the focus of your face :)

When you use eyeliner, you close the eye in. Usually if you use it on the top lash, it makes your eyelashes look thicker, and the bottom lash is usually what makes your eyes look smaller (especially if you use too much).

I think that eyeliner on your top and lower lashes can really enlarge your eyes. I personally like using a dark brown liner which really makes my eyes look bigger without the harsh look from black liners. If you like black liner, I would recommend the Shiseido fine eyeliner. It is easy to apply and is versatile in drawing thin to thick lines.

It does that. It might help to use lighter color eye-liner or apply lighter shade of eye-shadow right on the top of eyeliner and blend it all over the lid. Use mascara or lash curler to open up the eyes.

It is definitely difficult to apply eyeliner correctly. It takes soooo much practice! It really should make your eyes look bigger so keep practicing.
I have tried all different kinda... and while the liquid stuff everyone is suggesting does work, it can look heavy. I have found that Stila's Smudge pots works the best. You use a tiny brush to apply it - it is easier to applied and looks more natural.
Keep Practicing! Good luck.

use a liquid eyeliner it allows you to apply a thinner line i use loreal
it has a very fine thin brush
i also sometimes use a white liquid eyeliner with a brown liquid liner above it
it softens the look
i have found brown is also better than black it is more natural looking
i hate the heavy eye makeup look
i think it looks more natural not that made up look
i like people to notice the entire me not just my eyes
hope that helps!!!!!!!

only line the top lid from the middle to the outer edge and keep it close to your lashes. If you get too much, just use a q-tip to thin the line down. This should open your eye up. good luck
