Are you bothered by the celebrations in the NFL?

Well, yes and no.
The Celebrations have been around a very loooooong time. I think they really became popularized by Mark Gastineau of the Jets with each sack. Right there, thats at least 25 years ago.

The Lanbeau Leap by the Packers. That was cool. The Gatorade dunk, created by the Giants. That was cool.
Just groups of guys going crazy celebrating a TD... Its part of the game.

Its guys like T.O and Chad Johnson annoy me. Like they spend time thinking about what theyre gonna do. The proposing to the cheerleader, the eagle flap in the Dallas star back a few years...... That stuff is stupid. Joe Horn was another one, against the Giants a few years back, when he pulled the cellphone out from under the goalpost.

Those things are just a slap to the face, rather than a mere celebration.

Just so you know what type of fan I am upfront so my answer will make more sense...I am a football purist. I prefer watching high school football over college and college over pros. I like watching the actually chess match that is the game rather than watching all the other crap that goes along with the upper levels of the game.

With that being said we all have to keep in mind that some of the draw to the NFL is the player personalities. I became a Denver Broncos fan long long ago when John Elway dissed the Baltimore Colts to become a Bronco. I always followed John Elway as a player but that was a time when big time players stayed with one team for their career. Now days a player may go on to play for 2,3,4,etc different teams in their careers. You'll often hear people say "I am a T.O. fan" or something. And those types of fans enjoy seeing their favorite player do well. Some players act like they have been there before, throw the ball to the ref, and run to the sidelines. Some decide to do a Riverdance.

But the bottom line is (and sorry to be so lengthy)...the NFL has become what it is because of celebrations like these. ESPN is not going to hype a replay of a guy going into the endzone, calmly getting up, and giving the ball to the official. ESPN is going to hype up the big time celebrations. Why? Because that is what some fans want. To be the best sports league in the US you need to offer different things to different people. If the NFL was all about no showboating, no celebrations, and no fun...they would lose fans which equals lost revenues.

In my personal opinion the celebrations are WAY too much. But if it's good for the game I don't see them going anywhere.

I am not bothered by the celebrations. The thing I am bothered about is the penalties for the celebrations. I mean come on, if you score or have a good play you should be able to do some kind of celebration. Its not hurting anyone. I can see if they are taking up alot of time, but when a celebration last 5 secs and they throw a flag -- that's ridiculous!!! Let 'em have fun and chill out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hell no! I love them! I don't remember what ever happened to the dirty bird, (Falcons did when they scored a touch down in the 98-99 season when they beat my vikings) or what the rams did it 2000. I think people hate it because it pisses them off when they do it to there team. I would love to see Owens sign the football and throw it up in the stands, or see Chad Johnson give the ball CPR. I miss all of that and the new football comitioner has to do something about it. I am surprised that they didn't do anything to the Giants yet because they pretend to take a jump shot every time they get a sack. I think that its cool that these guys celebrate together, and it creates team cemistry.
Do you know why randy moss fake mooned green bay fans? I do, it's because there are packer fans that wait outside where the visiting team's bus is, and they moon them as the visiting team leaves. Good ups randy moss.

I'm more bothered by the penalties for the celebrations. If you score a touchdown you should be happy, right? I say skip the penalties and let the league review things after the fact - if any player does something that is out of line then the commissioner can fine him.

No, they are fun to watch.. exp. Chad Johnson's - lol. i dont really know why the NFL is crying about it all the time, maybe it have something to do with the whole Randy Moss TD celebration last season, in which it appered that he was mooning the crowd.

What bothers me is that the people doing the celebrations, most of the time, don't come ford ward and carry their team in times of need.

nope. wish there was more of them. the NoFunLeague's pretty out of control wil their restrictions on them. They've been pretty inconsistant with enforcement too (I think it was monday night they got a Buc on group celebration, because one guy semi-mimiced what the play-maker did, but the Giants (according the the announcers) do a group air-jump shot and they don't get called on it)

Course hypocracy and the NFL are pretty good friends

******
I doubt people re-read these, but to the guy who talked about Joe Horn, he called his kids (he had told them, since they couldn't go to the game since it was a school night, that he'd call them) so you can't totally rag on the guy for that

When going to a game; the average fan spends $200 to see Chad Johnson do a silly dance or Joe Horn answer his cell phone. Let it happen, its a kid's game and thats what the fans are paying to see. Let the players have fun. They have enough pressure playing in front of large crowds.

I enjoy the Lambeau leap, and so what if T.O. dances with pom poms?

Let the players have some fun!
