Television writers use creme brulee as a "short hand word" to show: "ok folks we are talking really fancy restaurant here." If you understand the process this seems really clumsy. I have heard it a lot. Funny 30 years ago they would have said: "they are serving baked alaska," considered very elegant for the time.

As you said, it's a sign of the times. It's very popular nowadays. When you go to stores (dept. stores, lnt or bbb), you see a lot of ramekins with a creme brulee set complete with small torch being sold. Creme brulees are actually very rich and creamy, yummy and delicious! Maybe in a few years, we'll have another dessert to go gaga over.

Yes, Is that the dessert they always take the torch to , to give it that crispy top, if so , then yes I see it on T.V all the time, and the references are on alot of shows, Maybe everyone just loves creme brulee.
