There are a LOT of note-worthy happenings in 1986. In the US, the Challenger disaster is probably most remembered, but there were other memorable news items, including the launching of the Mir space station and Hands Across America.
By the way - if you go to wikipedia and put in 1986, you'll get a timeline of events for the entire year.

To be honest, I was doing a lot of nightclubbing and drugs at the time, so 1986 (&87/8/9/90etc) is a bit of a blur, though I do remember a lot of jokes about astronauts and seven-up! Presume that was the Challenger disaster, seen live on TV. Even Noel Edmunds only killed 1 person live on tv, not 7, though he did also kill Saturday night entertainment.
