edit: Byourownjudge has it right. It's a mother kneeling and it has African origins. Maternity figures are very important in African culture, and the kneeling mother in particular is a popular sculptural topic. In fact, if you do a google image search for kneeling mother, 5 of the first 8 results are of African sculptures.
