I always like to include a recent photo of our family or just the children.
I have also received from people a letter that tells what has happened during the year. For example, what new and exciting things have taken place, new jobs, births, etc. Just a simple letter that lets people know that you may not necessarily be able to tell in everyday life.
Finally, seal the card with a wax seal that has a christmas theme or your monogram.

Homemade are nice. Or something that says something about you, or the person you are sending to... for example, I usually get cards with Cardinals, dogs or cats on them. I've had pets for all my life and cardinals were my grandma's favorite bird.
I ALWAYS write in a personal note/letter. Sometimes I send pictures in my cards. It's always nice to get something other than the same old pre-printed message and a signature.

I believe it is the personal note that I write to each recipient. It lets them know I was actually thinking about them, and just not signing my name and sending it off.

Last year I had my stepson (9yrs. old) make all of our Christmas cards out of construction paper and glitter. It was quite messy, but everyone that got them really liked them. He thought it was really neat too.
