I've read all the old questions on the topic but haven't actually heard anything from anyone who has actually made one. I would like the input of anyone who has (maybe the people who asked the question in the first place!) Please be specific.
Also, does anyone know what they use to decorate those fake display cakes bakeries have?

I know they are fake. I was thinking I could take about 3 cardboard boxes and stack them, the paint them, since some cakes are square anyway. It's the decorating after painting part I'm not sure how to do.

The one that was used at my friend's birthday was actually a wooden/styrofoam cake. It had a wooden base (on wheels) and then stytrofoam circle layers to make the cake part. It was decorated with spray paint, some fabric and I think more styrofoam.
I think most cakes that people jump out of are not real cakes.

Usually the cakes that people (e.g. strippers) jump out of are fake. I worked in my grandparent's bakery in high school, and I don't think you could really construct a real cake that someone could actually hide in. I suppose you could construct a shell that someone could hide in and then hand build some cake around it. And a lot of times, they use plaster (very very thick plaster) to decorate the samples.

I think using a real cake to jump out of is a little too sticky to use, they usually use fake cakes....
