The loneliest place in the world when we don't feel understood, is in a crowd.
All humans are alone, we are born alone, despite having parents there, we are still a lone soul entering the world... and however many people we have in our lives, we die alone as well.
It is the nature of being a separate being, a separate individual to others.
The test of loneliness, is to care for others first, and close the gap a little between ourselves and them, by dint of this, our loneliness abates for awhile.
More than at any time in history, we have lonely souls, this very medium we are using to discuss the subject proves this... and it separates us further. It's as if, we seek to actively encourage our separateness by enveloping these isolating toys.
Then we complain about the lonely state that we inherit.

It is easy to feel alone when you are surrounded by a bunch of people. More so when you are around a bunch of people you don't know very well. Or even when you do know a couple of people well but they are talking about something that doesn't interest you. It is also possible to feel lonely when you are surounded by people that love and adore you.
I get like this when I am really depressed...and I don't feel as if anyone understands what I am going through...

yup, it isnt necessarily depression, it just means you feel different or you see people as being different to you. What works for me is to make a few good friends, rather than be a social butterfly who flits in and out of people's lives. I always maintain that you quality is better than quantity.
