small block chevrolet.....there are tons of them and the aftermarket is full of parts...you can easily get 400 horse power out of a 350 for little money

The best Cheap engines would be an old ford 1600 pushrod or a Mini a series. These you can pick up from a scrap yard or out of a paper for next to nothing they are pretty much bullet proof and loads of modifications can be done on them. But you must remember tuning even one of these engines will not be cheap as no tuning is ever cheap! But these would be the cheaper options.

British motor and as cheaply as possibe? Try an A series Austin engine as used in the Mini and god knows how many other BL/Rover cars.Ford?Try the Kent ohv.Again loads of tuning bits available. Maybe the Rover K series too. Of the yanks ANY chevvy or ford unit should give more poke easily.

It depends what shell you want around it ?
I like Diesel and tuning is now available wih black box upgrades which the insurance companys don't mind. Gives you 25% more power and the MPG can go up. Mine did. I have Vectra 2.0 16v DTi which is doing 45 to 55 mpg and in 5th gear pulls from 40 mph like a train. Much more flexible to drive.
Also fit good oil, exhaust & K&N air filter and she goes good.

a saxo vts engine our the 106 gti they are both the same and they give loads of power and you can do turbo upgrades they are standard 0-60 mph in 7.2 secs and remember they are only a 1.6 engine with a top end speed 130 mph (standard)... you can buy these engines for a round 500 pounds and and do all sorts to them that's how they got the nick name pocket rocket... i have mine doing 0-60 in under 6 secs and will sit with any thing on the road ;) .... boy i love my vts :)

If its for a car? you cant go wrong with the honda civic V-TECH engine 1.5 1.6v with variable valve timing and plenty of aftermarket parts to make it awesome.
