If you're going to spend some time in the service, the Air Force is the best branch to go into. They are far better funded than the other branches. In addition, Air Force training is more likely to translate to civilian careers at the end of your time. Lastly, the Air Force has the lowest percentage of casualties as compared to the other branches of the service.
Just be aware of the sacrifices you will make if you choose this path. Basic training will seriously rewire your head. Not always a bad thing, but it's going to happen. Deployment can be long, especially now that we are involved in an unending "war on terror." Time spent away from home, sometimes in a location where you cannot communicate with family and loved ones is hard. You may find yourself fighting a war you don't agree with, killing people you don't consider your enemies. Many vets that I know have serious problems with what they did.
Know what you're getting into before you do it. If it's right for you, it's a damn good place to be. If it's not, you're going to be in hell with no way out.
Good luck.

Great idea! That is a great way to start off in the world. They set you up for a life of success. I would join, but now I am too old (34), and have too many responsibilities. Plus, they don't want me (a homo), in spite of what has been said about the don't ask don't tell rule.
Just try not to get your behind blown up, or shot off.
Go with God.

It's a good idea if you want to see the world, especially the middle east. Beware of recruiters giving you false information and making false promises or guarantees

If you want to go to war in Iraq, join, we certainly need more troops over there. Personally, I don't think its worth dieing to defend freedom for a country that obviously doesn't want it. If democracy is about majority rule, does it really look like Iraqi citizens want a secular, elected government. Are we supportive enough of democracy to enough to let them choose their own form of government or does their democracy need to match ours?

That life is not for me, but God bless you for having the courage, conviction, and patriotism to even consider the option. Good luck with whatever you choose!
