Probably in the UK I would say (as much as I am loated to admit it) that London has the greatest musical heritage. Although places like Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds etc gave us Oasis, the Smiths, the Beatles... It was London that gave Britain all its early music venues and the majority of artists from the seventeenth century right up to the end of the second world war. Without London establishing the beginings of a music industry all the great bands of Britain would basically be local entertainers.

It's official - Liverpool has had more number ones per head of population than anywhere else. Obviously The Beatles helped enormously, but there were further successes in the 80s from bands like Frankie Goes To Hollywood.

As a Manc, I'm slightly biased. We have both created a vast number of great bands and artists from the sixties onwards. Whilst I feel the Beatles are the most over-rated rubbish ever, Liverpool has given us 'Echo & the Bunnymen', 'Teardrop Explodes' and 'Frankie GTH' to name just a few, whilst we had the whole Madchester thing.
Also, the wromg side of the Pennines has produced some decent acts; Sheffield gave us Heaven 17, Human League & Def Leppard, whilst Newcastle/Gateshead area has produced Eric Burden & the Animals, and Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys.
Across the pond, Chicago gave us House (though most of the DJs were from other places), and Philadelphia gave us the great Stax record label, upon which many great Northern Soul bands were published (far better than Motown). Seattle claims to have created Grunge, though we Brits know it was Wales (New Model Army). New York also gave us such emminent stars as 'Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five' & the 'SugarHill Gang'.

Easy one...no question about it...
New Orleans.
The home of Fats Domino and Louis Armstrong.
The birthplace of Jazz.
Home of the annual Jazzfest and Voodoo Musicfest...among others.
A gumbo of Creole, Cajun, Blues, Jazz, and African American music.
Streets there have been filled with music since the 1700's.
funeral processions...blasting music from the Second Line.
Preservation Hall Band...travelling around the world. All abou the music...no a/c, no booze.
Definitely New Orleans.

Neither London Has the great musical heritage. In the US I'd say Detroit with the Motown Sound.

Depends on the genre, almost all music today has blues heritage, and obviously the blues capital is new orleans, lousiana. Musicians congregate to areas where they feel they will have the best chance to find like-minded bandmates and succeed.
