There are certainly ethical issues with the advertising industry. It is by its very nature designed to subvert people's will and cause them to act in the interest of the advertiser and not in their own interest.

Modern advertising techniques were created in Nazi Germany in Hitler's propaganda ministry. It included cinematic techniques such as those developed by Leni Reifenstahl's 'The Power of The Will', which lionized Hitler. The Nazi propaganda worked so well that in 1945, the Americans took their research and put it to work on Madison Avenue. In the same way they also took Nazi rocket technology and scientists, and used them to go to the Moon.

The point of designing a good effective advertisement is to direct the viewer's attention, arguably to misdirect it. While I enjoyed creating advertising for clients who made good products, you can't realistically make a living restricting your clientele. Eventually, I moved into the technical end of printing where I was happier.

I agree. Marketing is sucking the soul out of everything that is original and creative in our society. Politicians don't debate, they advertise. Artists don't create, they push product. When everything is done from the perspective of marketing and when marketing is so pervasive, it begins to take the place of real ideas and culture.

Don't agree.
People have to be informed about products. There should be laws against untruthful advertising. But it would be hard to enforce.

One man's immoral activity is another man's hobby.
It's all subjective.
