Happiness is important to us as humans because we all want to fulfil ourselves and sometimes better ourselves. Being happy is important, so you can live and work and play well with others! It's one of those things you learn in childhood - emotions - happy, sad, angry, scared etc.
If you are feeling depressed, talk to someone about it, someone you know or a doctor or a counsellor.
If you are feeling low, I hope you feel better soon.

It is not important to be happy. What IS important is that you are content. Happiness comes and goes just as saddness.
In order to reamin content, every person must have:
1. Something that you do.
2. Something that you love.
3. Something that you hope for.
If you keep these three things in your life continually, you will be content, and sometimes even happy.
Sociologists do have studies, however, that happiness leads to good health and that depression can cause a breakdown in the immune system of a human being - and all of the animal kingdom for that matter.
But, as I said - CONTENTMENT is the single most important value to maintain as a human being.
I would also like to add that true contentment can only be derived from a beleif in the hereafter and of a truly loving and merciful God who created all things.
The only thing that EQUALS God's love, however, is God's JUSTICE. The knowledge that God will bring punishment to the wicked corrupters of the Earth adds to my contentment - The knowledge that those who have destroyed the Earth, and murdered humanity will not escape justice, though they may in this life, they will not escape in the hereafter.

Happiness is important because it is the meaning of life. Billions of dollars can't buy happiness. I would be much happier if I have loved ones around me who makes me "happy" than having all the money in the bank which will make me want more and more and never be satisfied of what i have.

It's not - at least all the time. If you do not understand or experience unhappiness then you will not appreciate happiness. But, being happy or content, is good for us - it can lower our stress levels and how we interact with other people and that must be good. Of course, one persons happiness can be another's misery - think of criminals, extortionists, etc., they get their kicks by making others miserable and desperate. So it's a question of perspective - happiness is good if earned by fair means and not at someones else's expense.

It's actually just a personal decision.
But from a evolutionary standpoint, being "happy" releases endorphins which make your body more resistant to stresses from the environment and disease. Likewise, it make you more aware of your surroundings and less likely to starve to death in your cave, curled up in a ball of self-pity. Also, people want to be around you, supplying you with important familiar bond humans need.

So you don't look all sad and mopey.
So you don't cry all the time
So your hair doesn't fall out
So your friends like being with you
So your family like to be with you
So your workmates think you're an alwite geezer
So you get laughter lines and age normally without ending up looking like Michael Jackson.
so.....hmmmm out of ideas.
Just be happy coz it makes life easier and more pleasent for you and everyone around you.
