Most things you now take for granted were invented in the 19th C, such as cars, planes, electricity, light bulbs, cinema. All todays labour-saving devices run from electricity, so without that you'd be very busy with just the basics of living. Travel would have been arduous. And if there was any free time, there would be little that we do today that was available then.

The railroad and telegraph were two major inventions of the 1800s. They made for faster communication and travel.

The mail-order catalog. When Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Wards started sending catalogs out, they made it possible for people in fairly isolated towns to buy factory goods they'd otherwise never see. The catalogs were also used in schools for reading and writing and mathematics. Children improved their reading skills by reading about toys and gadgets they'd never get, but would like to see.
