51.1 million is A LOT of money. Now they're saying he wants another 45 million!! Who does this guy think he is?? He's too old in my opinion for that sort of money. There's a BIG difference between pitching in Japan and MLB. I wouldn't sign his *** for that kind of money.

The 51.1 million goes to his team the Seibu Lions as a posting fee, to compensate the team for the loss of Matsuzaka. Now they have the right to create his actual contract which will be 4-5 years for 7-10 million a year or around $40 mill which goes to him. The $51 million isn't included in the luxury tax, and think about the Japanese people buying Red Sox Matsuzaka jerseys. The man is a hero to them because of his performance in the WBC. The Red Sox will make back the $51 million posting fee before he becomes a free agent. Even if this is a lot to you, Barry Zito will make over $90 million and his numbers have gotten worse every year. And he's 26, so he's actually quite young, younger than Zito and entering his prime. Get your facts straight.

The only real argument is that this is a lot of money for a guy who will be classified as a rookie next year.

Matsuzaka will not see one dime of the $51.1m. That money is going to his team in compensation should the Red Sox sign him.

The contract between the Red Sox and Matsuzaka is being negotiated now.

The $51,100,000 is not Matsuzaka's. It goes to his Japanese team just to give the Red Sox exclusive rights to try and sign him to a deal. If they do not sign him within 30 days the Red Sox get their money back - and Matsuzaka gets nothing.

I think the whole thing is absurd. I used to be the biggest baseball fan in the world - actually have my whole den is in baseball decor - but I haven't watched more than about 10 innings of baseball total in the last 2 or 3 years. Pro sports, baseball in particular, is completely out of control financially and it has ruined things for kids and families in terms of sharing the traditions of the game. Its all about money and its a shame. (My understanding is that the 51.1 million was just to have the rights to deal with the guy - basically buying off is owners in Japan.)

And people wonder if teams like the Red Sucks and the Yankees are ruining baseball, when they're throwing money like this around like it's water.

THAT'S THE FEE PAID TO THE SEIBU LIONS JUST TO HAVE THE RIGHT TO TALK TO HIM. THE RED SUCKS HAVE THIRTY DAYS TO SIGN HIM TO A CONTRACT OTHERWISE HE GOES BACK TO JAPAN & THE FEE IS RETURNED BY SEIBU.
