If the power on light is out then I would think the fuse is the problem, there must be one somewhere in your fuse box. If located and found to be OK then perhaps the neon light has blown, do you have a mate with a electrical test-meter to check the circuit is OK. If circuit and fuse both OK but still no hot water then I would replace the thermostat in the immersion before actually having the water turned off, draining the tank and replacing the complete heater.

The average life of an immersion heater, depending if you live in a hard/ soft water area is about 5 years, so if your switch has a fuse in it, try replacing it with a 13amp fuse, if its just a switch, then it would be fused at the main fuse board, locate and replace, or if a trip type reset, if that still blows the fuse or trips out then im afraid that your immersion has had it and you need to call an electrician, to replace it.

If you have old type fuses then the immersion heater fuse will be marked with a blue dot/marking, the fuse rating will be marked 15amp If you have more recent circuit breaker types then it will be rated on the breaker as 16amp look for one that is switched off or if fuses pull out the one marked in blue and check if the fuse wire is broken, in either case ie a fuse or breaker has gone then i would suggest the you will have an even bigger problem with your immersion heater in your tank and will need a plumber or an electrician.

Phoning a plumber/electrician would be useful, otherwise you could just end up making the damage worse
