Quinceañera is a celebration marking a young woman's transition from childhood to womanhood and its typically celebrated in the Latin communities.

While I don't know if its etched in stone that you must be of Hispanic heritage to celebrate this occassion, this isn't an event that is typically crossed over to other cultures.

I'd say go for it - but at the same time, consider the fact that you don't want to be disrespectful to the tradition. Unless you are going to uphold everything that goes along with this wonderful event perhaps you can consider hosting a formal party in the same form and fashion but drop the Quinceañera name to elimninate the chances of disrespecting the culture or anyone.

For those who don't know: A quince is a tree fruit about the size and shape of an apple, usually green in exterior color. However the taste is very bitter, with overtones reminicent of quinine. It's a big joke among some people to hand a bloke a quince and tell him it's an apple and laugh at his expression after he bites into it.

Quince are sometimes sliced and cooked in sugar to make excellent marmalade. They are also used occasionally to jazz up apple pie.

A sweet sixteen is a variety of apple. It has a slightly woody-nutty aftertaste. My own favorites are Pink Lady and Braeburn. (Braeburn means "hill pond" in old Irish.)

You don't have to be Mexican to have a quince. You have to be rather strange to enjoy eating them raw, though.

If you Afro-Latino then no but if your just Black American then it's a little different. But when I was 16 our church sponsored a cotillion for the young girls in the church, it's very similar to a quince except it was for several girls instead of just one.

If part of your hertigage is hispanic then there is nothing wrong with it, its part of the culture but if you aren't hispanic then no don't do it. It's a hispanis tradition that is meaningful and special to the girl and her family. Someone who isn't hispanic having one is like my brother having a bar mitzva (sp) and he's catholic.

Cubans have it too. It is kind of silly to have one if you're not Latina. Why not just wait a year and have a Sweet Sixteen?
