The reason that there is only one Captain on a ship, is the same reason that there should be one CEO - Someone has to make the ultimate decision, and take responsibility for that decision.

The term CEO which means Chief Executive Officer , would imply one. That is my gut feeling. There could be Co-presidents of a company, I used to work for one.

the one I worked for, the CEO had retired, and the two directly below him were promoted to the same rank to take over as co-presidents. The corporate boys and other head honchos would soon negotiate and vote on a new CEO.
