Not far from Golden Gate Park and Ghiradelli Square on the corner of Mason and Water St. is Fior D'Italia.
It's really good, and it's the oldest Italian restaurant in America.

Nice thought on your part.
So, where to go depends on variables such as driving, walking, or public transportation, any prefered neighborhood, reservations or not, etc.. Of course, walking by or in before selecting a place is always a noteworthy idea.
In the French category, a chef who came to SF from France, Pascal Rigo, has a couple of nice places, Le Petit Robert on Polk St. and Chez Nous on Fillmore St. Both offer great food and nice atmospheres.
For Asian stuff, 2 places come to mind. On the more lively, eccentric live places, there is the Dragon Well on Chesnut and Pierce. It's more of a yuppie place, but offers great food, and live and bright setting, and is close to various places for after. Reservations recommended. There is also Khan Toke, out on Geary and 22nd Ave. They are only a Thai restaurant, but maybe one of the 3 or 4 best in the US. It's been owned by the same family since inception about 20 years ago, offers a quiet, mellow atmosphere, slightly dark inside, and about 110 menu items. Very friendly staff and great food. Reservations recommended for Fri, Sat, and Sun nights.
My only suggestion for American food is Brazen Head on Filbert and Greenwich. It's been open forever, offers a quiet and comforting atmosphere. Serves traditional east coast food, with about 20 selections for dinner. Reservations recommended.

L'Amour dans la fours was mentioned above and my wife and I had an unbelievably great valentine's dinner there. It's a lot like a Parisian cafe.
You might also try the Gaylord's Indian restaurant in Ghiradelli, it has such a great view it's given 4 lips in the book best places to kiss in Northern California.

For an over the top dinner (That is sooo worth it) try Flueur de Lys
on Sutter Street, a few blocks from Union Square.
http://www.fleurdelyssf.com/
Habana on Van Ness is also really yummy and kind of seductive.
Don't go to the Stinking Rose. Tourist trap, bad food.

For a memorable meal, complete with great food, service and a view you must dine at The Carnelian Room. It sits atop the Bank of American building, on California Street.
Reservations are mandatory.
Your wife will love you all over again !!!

I would like to suggest L'Amour Dans Le Four. They server great authentic French food and the ambience is romantic and intimate. The price is slightly above average (about $40 to $50 per person) but it's well worth it. The owner is very friendly and servers are very helpful and knowledgeable about their menu.

Go to TheMenuPages.com-SanFrancisco
Pick out the area & cuisine. Then choose a restaurant-- check-out their rating,$$$,hours of operation & last but not least -the menu. If you want to really impress your wife, pick out a place and phone them ahead and tell them of your special night and even order your meal at the same time. I bet you they will make it an evening the both of you will remember forever.

the carnelian room is fun, but if you have some time to make reservations and you dont care about the cost, i would recommend gary danko's. it is close to the warf, but it is rated one of the top restaurants in the country. We went there and had an awesome EXPERIENCE. it is truly more than just a meal. 5 courses, wine parings, attentive staff. not to be missed.
happy anniversary!
