Dennis Rodman used to like to eat acid and play hide-and-go-seek before he started playing basketball...He wasn't very good, though...Not good enough to go pro...That neon yellow and pink hair he had back then would glow in the dark and give him away every time...And he wouldn't listen to his coach (Bill Walton, I think) and shave his head...

Danny Ainge - of the Boston Celtics and the Phoenix Suns - was a minor-league baseball player for the Toronto Blue Jays.

The question was "great basketball player" right? I dont think Ainge falls into that category.
Iverson had a scholarship and had a choice between basketball and football, we all know what sport he chose. The funny thing is i read somewhere that he was a better football player than a basketball player. Now that's scary.

Current Celtics' President of Basketball Operations and former Boston Celtics player Danny Ainge once played professional baseball prior to joining the NBA.
Ainge needed to go to court in order to free himself from his baseball contract in order to pursue his basketball career.
Hope this helps.

Tim Duncan - he first started swimming and was one of the nation's top swimmers in an age category - that is until Hurricane Hugo destroyed the pool. Duncan did not want to go swimming in the ocean(he was afraid of sharks), and played basketball.
As for great, we all know this guy fits to that category. 2-time season MVP, 3-time season MVP, ROY and the only player in NBA history to win All-NBA and All-Defensive Team honors in 9 consecutive seasons.
