I am going to make soap. I am ordering the clear glycerin. Would food coloring work to color the soap? I don't have a hobby shop in this little town. I have to either drive 4 hours to get to the nearest one or order my supplies.

BTW I am making soap baskets for Christmas gifts. The stuff I am getting is a heat & pour all I have to do is add my own scents & colors.

Please do not use food coloring. It stains! Nothing would be worse than getting a beautifully crafted handmade soap that leaves your sink and body tinged blue! If you absolutely can't order on line or ebay--try using melted crayons (sparingly!) If you have a Ben Franklin near--they may have a limited supply of soap colorants for you. Some of my favorite suppliers are:

www.scenterstage.com (superb bases, molds and fragrances!!)
www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com

Hi there! This is funny, I read your other question on peppermint first!

I do a lot of soap and have been selling them off and on a few years now, so please take this to heart. I'd HATE to see you do your gifts and have something GO WRONG!
no, you cannot, use food coloring! DON'T do it! Ya know how food coloring stains your skin when you get it on directly?
YOUR SOAP will do that to people, if you use food coloring!

You can use crayon! I have dne that in a pinch and it works fine. Also there are many herbs and spices you can use as colorants!
But PLEASE, don't use food coloring!
GOOD luck, your going to have fun!
Doing Melt and Pour Glycerine can be so fun!
Enjoy!

Yes, food coloring should work fine.

Personally, I wouldn't mess with lye when I could buy soap at the store. Why don't you dip candles or something?
