I'm using a dell inspiron, lately its been giving me heaps of problems-the worst being that sometimes a blue screen appears to tell me some problem was evaded and all physical memory dumped. Then i have to press the power button to restart the system-it happens every 5 mins or so,and is really annoying. The last time i sent my pc to dell it took me a bloody 2 weeks to get it back, and there were heaps of problems involved so i'll send it to them as a last resort-anything i can do myself to fix this?

1- what was the last program you have installed before facing this problem, usually this is associated with installing programs not compatible with your operating system/system architicture
so try to un-install share ware programs and old programs designed for win16 or win32

2- try not to boot up you machine while having USB devices connected to it, this might cause the system to hang

3- back up your data and re-install windows from scratch, and take care not to delete any system files, also make sure to install a good anti viruse

a blue screen mostly comes from hardware errors. i suppose it might be a bad ram.
in case you have 2 ram modules do the following:
- remove the AC adapter
- take out the battery
- touch with both hands a blank metal surface on the laptop (best is the connectors on the back side) then open the memory bay on the bottom and take out one module (to take out a module spread the 2 clips on each side away from the module at the same time). close the bay and attach only the AC adapter and start the laptop.
- if you get the blue screen again, repeat the above and exchange the 2 modules (only 1 module may be inserted).
- if the laptop is running ok now, you have the defective ram module on the table.
hint: be careful with these ram modules and put them (after taken out of the laptop) in a aluminum foil (like the one using in the kitchen)

if this doesn't solve your problem, i fear you have to send your laptop to repair.

there must a be a program in your computer that's running and creating all this conflict, i suggest u back up your files in a dvd-R if u have large files, gather all the basic program you need including the anti-virus software and reformat your drive and install windows xp using the re-installation cd , that only takes a couple of hours to finish and is way better than taking it to dell have it sit there for 2 weeks and get the same results. its really easy, you should try it

You have Operating system problems. Your window programs is not working as it should. there could be many causes; virus or other. Be sure to save your documents, because they will probably have to erase everything and install a new Operating system. good luck
