It's made by bacteria acting to decompose organic material. Landfills generate noticeable amounts of methane. When living things eat food, the bacteria that live in our guts also generate methane. The methane from cow dung and chicken dung has been used by farmers as a sourc of gas for heating and lighting on their farms. Some methane is produced by the breakdown of other gasses underground from petroleum. But they are all natural gas, in the sense that it did not use up additional energy sources to be generated.
Just to contrast with natural gas, generated gas is made by heating bio waste (sawdust, corn shucks and cobs, etc.) in a closed container. Combustible gasses are given off, along with turpentine, acetic acid, creosote and other chemicals that are useful in industry. What is left is charcoal.

When anaerobic bacteria decompose something, they can give off methane. That means in the intestines of cows and some people, their farts can also contain methane because the bacteria in their intestines were the kind that produce methane.

Almost all the methane on Earth is made, directly or indirectly, by organisms. A small proportion comes from buried, decomposing plants, whose insoluble parts become a material called kerogen. When kerogen breaks down through thermal "cracking," the result is methane, as well as longer-chain hydrocarbons like ethane, propane, and butane. Oh and don't forget cow farts lol.

methanogenisis produces methane. This can occur in landfills and many anaerobic systems (w/o oxygen). Methane is also produced from cow farts.
