The government hides alien knowledge and/or presence because leaking it would cause pandemonium amongst the various religious sects around the world, which is/are about 90% of this planets inhabitants, and would shatter their belief system and blow holes in the "God (whichever version you choose to subscribe to) created man in his own image". statement in religious teachings.

I personally think that they hide the facts to preserve the worlds religons. Maybe the vatican pays them off or they like to keep the religons in tact because they help perpetuate war. Or, they are afraid if we have good relations with aliens then our goverments will be found obsolete and they'd be out of a job.

Apparently you don't know the definition of fact. There is also a relationship to what is possible, and what is probable that you have not been able to grasp. But, if you are coming up with a new sci-fi plot line, you might be heading in an interesting direction.

Just because there is no evidence it doesn't mean that there is a cover up. If the government is so incompetant at running everyday affairs, then why should they be any better at covering things up so perfectly?
