lt is the season before winter.

Fall is also known as Autumn.

When certain tree loose their leaves completely. Before loosing them lots of tree acquire very bright colour, people take time off to enjoy natures art work on the land scape it is a sight to behold, in many parts of the world.

In some Indian languages it will be PanKh-rd RooToo(Gujarati). In Gujarati language, six seasons are accounted for, in USA, Europe, Australia they have four seasons, Summer, Fall or Autumn, Winter and Spring in this order.

It starts in the northern Hemisphere early in August, way up north(Alaska) and if you are in Texas you can experience it in late November or early December as you go south fall is very short and it is not very distinct..

In Bombay India it is hardly experienced as the new leaves bust out very fast but you can see lots of leaves falling and leaves all over the place the order is also different Winter comes first and the fall the spring.......

All the former answers are correct, in a certain manner. If We accept that autum and fall are synonimus of the same season, after summer, and before winter, so the correct use of the word fall is to be applied on those countries up north, and down south where the weather changes of this season produces the "falling of the leaves from some or almost all the trees of the northern or southern areas of these countries.

Think in Kachemira, is located at the north of India, the weather changing is extreme enough to affect the vegetal life, so in autum, the leaves will fall; for them autum could be called also "fall", and this is natural, but not necessarily for those tropical countries located around the Equator. They will have their own autum, but not really a "fall" of the leaves in their trees.

Fall is the American and Australian Term for Autumn. The term is used because in Autumn the leaves fall to the ground which indicates Winter is around the corner and trees become bald-pated.
