MacBeth, fearing MacDuff, sent troops to murder MacDuff and his family, but MacDuff wasn't home. So they murdered MacDuff's wife and children.
This act of excessive violence outraged everybody, but especially MacDuff himself. It was this that motivated MacDuff to attack and kill MacBeth.
