This is how to compress old files on your drive, it assumes you are using XP.

1 - Right click on My Computer and select Manage

2 - Click on Disk Management and find the C: drive

3 - If it is NTFS, skip to step 11

4 - If it is Fat32, do the following:

5 - click start, run, type cmd

6 - in the command prompt type convert C: /fs:ntfs

7 - enter the volume label, this the name of the drive in bold letters in disk management

8 - when it asks to dismount enter N

9 - when it asks to perform it on next reboot enter Y, reboot it will run a disk check and convert the drive. At this point it may error out if you do not have enough free space. If that happens you will need to delete some stuff or burn it to a cd an put it back later.

10 - Now your drive it ntfs, and we can compress it

11 - open my computer, right click on C: and select properties

12 - on the general tab at the bottom is a checkbox to compress the drive, check it and hit apply

13 - choose the option to apply to subfolders (should be default) - the process will take some time to complete.

14 - let it compress the drive and reboot. This should save you a gig or more. You can possibly save about 25% of the amount of data you have, but it depends greatly on what type of data it is.

There are plenty of ways to free up space. The most common way is to go into your internet browsers options and delete your cookies and cache. After that, eliminate programs that you don't need. You really don't need another program if you are trying to conserve space. Songs movies etc... take up lots of hard drive space. you might consider deleting ones you don't need. Or possibly buy another hard drive. For completely removing internet cache and cookies, as well as program cache i would recommend CCleaner (not a mispelling) you can find it at www.download.com. Its good for completely removing any traces of visiting any site. It also has a registry fixer you should run if your computer seems to be glitchy.

Im not sure of any programs that delete specific files completely, but you might try download.com, or www.sourceforge.net. Those are great sites for free programs.

Defrag your hard drives when needed, especially after removing programs you no longer use.

Free up space. Remove programs you no longer use by going to Control Panel.

Run your maintenance program regularly. Compresses files, dumps your trash bin and clears your internet cache.

Video files take up a huge amount of space, second would be sound files. To erase unused hard drive space, search for a freeware program called Eraser but BE CAREFUL! It is very easy to remove vital files from your OS using any program of this sort.

Also check your e-mail program to see if it's saving the "sent messages."

And if you use Instant Messenger, it might be archiving your messages! This is huge, make sure you check that out.

If you are using xp, then you can put your mouse over a folder and it will tell you size of contents, that's sometimes a good clue finder.

Good luck!

Run "Disc cleanup" a program already installed on your PC.
It cleans out old files you no longer use, does not take very long
either.
